ZZ 502-ci 502 Long Block Base Engine Kit
wpe14.jpg (20235 bytes)

The king of all big block crate engines is the ZZ 502/502, with torque and horsepower that will have you grinning and streetable manners that have your competition wondering what hit them. The ZZ 502/502 represents our latest and best efforts to develop awe inspiring big block power in a dependable, durable and drivable big block crate engine. With its big valve aluminum heads, roller camshaft and complete dyno tuned induction and ignition system, this is as close as you'll come to a custom built 502 at crate engine prices. And for those that like to grind on heads, change cams, mill for compression or whatever, we've left it only partially assembled. Make no mistake, everything you need is there, but you don't need to disassemble anything to make head mods or an intake swap. It really is the best of both worlds, bolt it together and go, or tweak it to meet your specific needs.

It's like someone at GM Performance Parts has been there, and we have. The ZZ 502/502 makes extensive use of aluminum to keep weight down. Including aluminum heads, intake, water pump, and valve covers. Additionally, this king of the crate engines is full of heavy duty parts, to ensure that it will be making awesome horsepower for a long, long time. With its forged aluminum pistons, forged steel connecting rods with 7/16" bolts, forged steel crankshaft, 4-bolt main block, stainless steel valves, 6 quart oil pan, and windage tray, the ZZ 502/502 seems more like a custom race engine than a crate engine.

With a 5800 RPM redline it might just feel more like a custom race engine than a crate engine too. Available as a long block kit or a complete engine kit, the ZZ 502/502 is designed to meet your needs. The base kit includes a fully assembled short block with 2.25" intake aluminum heads, valvetrain, aluminum valve covers, harmonic balancer and 14" automatic trans flexplate. The complete engine kit adds an aluminum intake manifold, 850 cfm carb, complete ignition system, gear reduction starter and aluminum water pump. Both kits include hardware and gaskets for all parts included in the particular kit. Finally "some assembly required" is a good thing.

The ZZ 502/502 is not intended for marine use, and should only be used in 1973 and earlier pre-emissions street vehicles or any year off road vehicles.

Technical Notes: Do not use bolt sealer on the cylinder head bolts, the holes are blind tapped. The long block kit includes partial engine, cylinder heads, valve covers, valvetrain, and fasteners and gaskets for the parts included. The complete engine kit includes the long block kit plus intake manifold, carburetor, distributor, water pump, spark plugs, spark plug wires with looms and additional fasteners and gaskets.

Tech Tip: "Oil Filter & Oil Cooler Bypass Valves"

Speed Reading by Wade Hajek of GM Performance Parts

Gen V and Gen VI big-block crate engines come with two oil pressure bypass valves installed in the engine blocks. Both of these valves are rated at 11 psi pressure differential. One valve is for the oil filter and the other is for the production oil cooler. If you install an aftermarket oil cooler or remote oil filter that attaches to the oil filter pad on the engine block, you should be aware that you need to change the oil filter bypass valve in the engine block. The aftermarket oil lines add resistance which will cause the bypass valve to bypass the aftermarket oil cooler and/or oil filter all the time.

Obviously, if the cooler and filter are bypassed the oil will be dirty and hot. Your engine could run hotter and could be damaged by dirt in the oil. If you choose to use an aftermarket cooler or remote oil filter that attaches to the pad, you should change the bypass valve to one with a higher differential pressure rating. A good choice would be GM# 25161284 which is rated at 30 psi. Remove the valve that is closest to the crankshaft and replace it with the new valve. Press the new valve into the engine block and stake it in three places. You should note that the bypass valves don't need to be changed if you use a production oil cooler which uses the production holes in the engine block and you don't use a remote oil filter. Also, if you use an adapter that just angles the filter for clearance you don't need to change the bypass valves.
